The story begins with Monkey D. Garp and Sengoku discussing a pirate named "Red Count" Redfield, a homo who was on the aforementioned level every bit Whitebeard and Roger in their primes albeit less notorious, who was released by Blackbeard during his raid on Impel Downwardly 2 years ago. He'due south also called "Ruby-red the Aloof" due to his preference to working alone. This occurs while Scarlet is attacking a fleet of Marine battleships, with Aokiji and Smoker seemingly assisting him. Despite what is going on, Ruby confirms that he's working alone. He so realizes that he has misplaced something.
The scene changes to the Straw Hat Pirates approaching an "Island of Promises", the island village of Transtown, with a companion, Pato. Pato, a pen that can get a tanuki, shows the power to create any object he writes on a leaf by creating a telescope. Pato, repaying the favor of being "fished upward" (and thus rescued) past the Harbinger Hats by bringing them to an island dubbed by Luffy equally "having the odor of neat adventures", intends to separate with them on the island to meet someone. The Straw Hats dissever into groups to resupply, with Luffy going out on his ain. Nami tells him to rendezvous at the local inn.
While exploring, Luffy sees a woman being harassed by thugs who expect payment for "protecting the isle" despite never being requested to do so. Luffy intervenes and beats the thugs up. The adult female, Yadoya, thanks Luffy and treats him to a meal at her inn, later on which he naps in. Meanwhile, the other Straw Hats are kidnapped past fake versions of Sanji, Usopp, and Robin. Afterward Luffy wakes, Pato hurriedly appears and relays what he just saw to Luffy, prompting him to rescue them. Before he goes, Yadoya agrees to forgo the nib for the inn if Luffy and his friends practice a favor for her, which he promises.

The Punk Hazard dragon appears before Luffy.
Luffy and Pato travel to what appears to exist Punk Hazard, which Luffy vaguely remembers. He encounters and defeats the same dragon he and Zoro killed before, only information technology disappears earlier Luffy can eat it. After traversing through the fire and water ice sides of the island, he and Pato encounter Caesar Clown. He engages them upon Smiley but is defeated. Pato and so discovers Zoro and Franky before Luffy knocks Caesar away with Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum. Zoro and Franky country they woke upwards there afterward napping on the One thousand Sunny before Luffy states that they and the rest of the Straw Hats were kidnapped. Back at the inn, the three of them are forced to make true on their hope to Yadoya; the improvement of their town past building establishments such as a local tavern. That evening, Redfield looks on every bit a sandstorm brews.
The next morning, the four of them gear up canvass to an island that profoundly resembles Arabasta. Upon landing, they are greeted past Crocodile who invites them to follow him if they want to find their friends. Afterward going through Arabasta soldiers and Kung-Fu Dugongs, they find Chopper and Usopp fending off more soldiers. They reunite and relax in an empty Yuba Village, where Pato and Chopper (in his Horn Indicate) dig upwardly a well. Luffy jokingly asks Pato to create a new chef to supercede the missing Sanji, but Pato states he tin can't create things also complicated, like human beings. The group continue into Alubarna where they find and defeat Crocodile at the very top. Crocodile comments on the growing intensity of battles since Whitebeard's death before disappearing in a puff of smoke.

Luffy clashes with Rob Lucci.
Back at the inn, the group discuss their next motion when they hear the sound of the Sea Train. They realize the sound came from the next island, which they recognize equally Enies Entrance hall. Upon arrival, Rob Lucci shows up, explaining that he knows where Robin is and will use this second opportunity to kill her. The group go along to the roof of the Courthouse of Justice, and so to the top of the Tower of Justice to defeat Lucci exactly where Luffy did two years agone. On defeat, Lucci announces that his powers were given to him past a certain human, and that man prevented Lucci from leaving the island. He disappears in a puff of smoke, leaving behind only a leaf. Through this, they deduce Pato is the source of these enemies and is the reason why the Straw Hats have been disappearing. They as well manage to find the residual of the Harbinger Hats.
Back at the inn, Pato lets slip that his Boss is responsible for the kidnappings simply cannot disembalm the motives. Nevertheless, he agrees to take them to his Boss to find out themselves. He shows remorse at deceiving the Straw Hats, but explains information technology was his Dominate' will which he willfully carries out without question.

Creating a copy of his subordinate, Ruby-red dismisses Pato.
The group next find themselves on Fish-Human Island, where they are ambushed past a overdosed Hody Jones, who claims divine intervention every bit the reason behind his gamble at revenge. Pato restates he can't create complicated things like Hody, but his Boss could and they will simply listen to his Boss. Subsequently making their way through Mermaid Cove and Gyoverly Hills, they encounter and defeat Hody in the Gyoncorde Plaza. Blood-red and so appears for the first time, whom Pato announces as his Dominate, and effortlessly destroys the Hody copy. Robin and Brook comment on his past notoriety. Ruby reveals he created the surroundings and enemies from the Harbinger Hats' hearts in society to achieve his goal of becoming the Pirate King. Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji attack in response, simply Reddish effortlessly knocks them and the other Straw Hats away. He most finishes them off but Pato begs him non to kill them. In response, Red uses Pato's powers to create a copy of Pato himself, discarding the original, saying he doesn't desire him to walk a path of carnage that he doesn't desire to walk. As he's virtually to leave, Zoro challenges him in one case more, then he instead creates a copy of Whitebeard to fight in his stead, but they narrowly defeat him. Pato is at a loss of what to practise now that his dominate no longer wants him, but Luffy asks what he himself wants to exercise. He follows them back to Transtown in the meantime.

Sanji and Luffy use Hell Memories: Gomu Shot.
Chopper suggests Pato joins the Straw Hats; Luffy says that's for him to decide. Feeling that the adjacent isle Ruby creates is chilly; they soon dock at the Sakura Kingdom on Drum Island. Upon witnessing Hiriluk'due south sakura cannons go out, the Straw Hats investigate to detect Wapol responsible (whom no-one seems to remember). He is easily defeated, but flees. Later on Sanji and Luffy defeat some familiar enemies, they melt an barrage caused by Wapol with a combination technique. At the superlative of his castle, every bit they prepare to battle Wapol again, Blackbeard appears. Wapol attempts to run abroad from him once more, merely Chopper enters his Monster Indicate and knocks him away. Blackbeard believes it was destiny that Ace died while Luffy lived and challenges him and his crew to a battle, but loses. The crew discover Red, having watched the entire fight from the distance, before disappearing. Pato asks to join Luffy's coiffure, yet wanting to serve his Boss but satisfied that his copy is doing so in his identify, simply Luffy rejects him. Although most of the coiffure are confused, Chopper reassures him. He asks the meaning behind his proper name, but he doesn't know, saying Crimson gave him the name. Chopper shares the origin of his name.

Red departs with "Robin" and "Pato".
At the Inn, Pato reveals Crimson is later on a certain Devil Fruit, hoping to prove useful to Luffy. The crew then decide to try and intercept Ruby before he finds it. They find themselves in Skypiea, where upon reaching Upper Yard they encounter Enel, yet wanting to accomplish Fairy Vearth. Robin explains to Pato that although Enel is fake, they will still fight him because his helm wills it and asks Pato if he want this. The crew run across Enel by the Gold Belfry in Shandora and he immediately uses 200,000,000 Volt Amaru to fight them, just is defeated the same way he was 2 years ago. Before they can celebrate, Carmine stands before them; he asks Robin to aid him find his fruit. Insulted, Sanji attacks, only is knocked away by Robin'south gigantic hand. Shocked, they observe a Robin re-create by Red's side, who leaves with him.

The two brothers square off.
The Harbinger hats feel they demand to search harder now that Red has Robin by her side. Nobody except Luffy recognizes it because it was the isle Luffy grew upward on. Later on reminiscing about starting time meeting Ace, they get in at a tree stump with iii cups of sake on it where Ace appears. Earlier engaging him, Luffy demands his crew to stand up down and fights him one-on-ane and Luffy wins. Confused, Pato asks why Luffy fights so hard confronting someone so important, which Nami explains that information technology's because he's so important to Luffy. Sanji asks Pato how information technology feels to be replaced merely he retaliates, maxim he has no right to talk about Red like that, which Luffy agrees. Upon leaving, Chopper invites Pato to follow. Ace then disappears in flames dissimilar in smoke similar the other copies.

Sanji deflects ane of Kizaru'due south light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation kicks.
At Transtown, Pato is even so unsure of himself; Zoro tells him to end thinking so much and trust his gut from time to time. The audio of firing arms leads them to the next island, the frozen battlefield of Marineford, with Admiral Akainu waiting at the end. Remembering his role in the war ii years ago, Luffy rushes alee. He'due south intercepted by Jinbe, just is quickly defeated and rushes alee. Admiral Kizaru gets in their way and fights the crew, but halfway through the fight the coiffure tell Luffy to become ahead while the remainder of them deal with Kizaru. He makes it by Akainu's Shooting star Volcano and some Pacifistas and makes it to Akainu, who insults Luffy past implying his coiffure won't witness his death. Meanwhile the Straw Hats announced to be getting grossly overpowered past Kizaru, and Akainu launches another Meteor Volcano in their direction to ensure their defeat.

Ace and Luffy fight as i.
Enraged, Luffy dashes for Akainu but is frozen in place past Admiral Aokiji. Pato tries to gratuitous Luffy but is knocked away by Akainu. Correct before Luffy is frozen entirely and impaled by an ice spear, the Ace copy appears suddenly and destroys the spear. He engages Aokiji solitary and defeats him before freeing Luffy. The Straw Hats also appear, miraculously overcoming their fight with Kizaru. Wounded, Aokiji uses his powers to create a battlefield for Akainu and the two brothers. Pato wonders how Ace is able to act on his own, which Robin believes is due to their bond they showed during their previous fight. Using their corresponding Fire Fists, the brothers sally victorious. Ace finally disappears, this time leaving a leaf behind. Pato decides he'll endeavor his hardest for Luffy like Ace did, which Luffy encourages.
When they return to the inn, Yadoya tells the grouping that large bats take been inexplicably actualization in the town at night; she will go to the plaza to investigate. Pato believes Cherry is responsible, and so he wants to use the opportunity to bear witness his old boss his true feelings. His senses are founded when they run into Ruby atop a bong tower above the plaza. He attacks the group with a multitude of copies of familiar faces, including the Harbinger Hats themselves. Undeterred, the real Straw Hats turn through the enemies to allow Pato to reach Red. Pato explains that he and his copy are non the same; it must exist him who helps Cerise achieve his goals as an marry, not a tool. Red states that being the Pirate King requires a certain amount of resolve. Surpassing the great names of the by requires abandoning various personality traits he considers weak, including his companionship with Pato.
Proving his resultant success, he holds a Devil Fruit in his hand: the Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire, which he promptly consumes. Claiming to have abandoned his final weakness, his humanity, he kicks Pato away into a edifice. Angry, Luffy retaliates merely Red dodges. He appears on the square, holding an unconscious Yadoya. The crew tin can only sentry in daze as Red bites her neck before dropping her unconscious, aged body on the ground. He stands over her, transformed into a younger, vampiric form. He explains that he stole her youth to regain his lost power. The crew try to fight him, merely when he is about to lose he regains all his lost force. He explains that with the likes of Roger and Newgate around, he gave up his appetite and quietly served his sentence at Impel Downward, but with them gone or succumbing to their age, he'll leave the same mark they did, using the immortality granted past his Devil Fruit to become the Pirate King.

Even in his severely aged body, Luffy continues to evidence his resolve.
Luffy refutes this, claiming historic period doesn't ascertain power, using Whitebeard as an example. When Red uses the now-retired Sengoku and Garp to prove his signal, Luffy demands he shows him what he actually means. Red complies, using his powers to severely age Luffy, whitening his pilus and making his body frail and weak and proceeds to beat Luffy down. Red claims his status proves his point, simply Luffy again talks about Whitebeard'south undying volition and ambition until his decease, and also mentions Rayleigh. Despite his condition, he catches a punch from Ruby-red. He talks about the i thing he has in common with the elder pirates: their unwillingness to give up. He overpowers Red and punches him into a edifice. He says Carmine has no right to steal the dreams of others when he and then easily gives up his own. Pato suddenly speaks up and defends his Dominate, saying he does what he does for fright of dying a shadow of his one-time self. Finally seeing Luffy's point, he proceeds to return Luffy's youth. He tells Luffy he gave up his dreams for fright of having to entrust them to others in his historic period, which is why he looked for a way to remain young through the Devil Fruit. Reformed, he returns Yadoya'south youth and vows to become the Pirate King with his own power, and Pato returns to his side to help him realize his dreams. Happy, Luffy grabs his copy'due south helm'due south coat and accepts one final challenge against Blood-red and Pato.

Red is finally defeated.
Afterward a long battle, the Straw Hats emerge victorious. Content, Blood-red concedes. Pato promises to challenge them once again in the time to come for the sake of his Boss, and anybody cheerfully accepts. Brook, in particular, remembers an interesting fact about him: during his time equally a pirate, Ruby-red, whose full name is Patrick Redfield, was also known every bit "Pato" for short. The fact that he gave his ain name to his companion may accept implied that he never meant to abandon him at all. Red, who recognizes Beck, jokingly mentions how different he looks later 50 years. After Luffy and Ruby challenge each other ane last fourth dimension, the crew ready sail.
